Course Overview

This course reviews the basic duties and responsibilities of small drinking water system owners and operators under Ontario Regulation 319/08.
Participants will learn about disinfecting water with a UV light, along with the operational and maintenance requirements of the equipment. Monitoring and responding to water quality issues through reporting and corrective actions will also be reviewed.
NOTE: Course content is intended for single connection systems with a groundwater source and no requirement for chlorine disinfection. For small systems using chlorine and requirements for secondary disinfection, please refer to Advanced for Small Drinking Water Systems (O. Reg. 319/08).

By the end of this session, participants will have gained an understanding of:
• Small drinking water system duties and responsibilities
• Knowledge of source water protection and maintenance requirements
• Describe disinfection of drinking water and operation of a UV light
• Perform common maintenance and routine checks required for a UV light
• Responding to potential drinking water quality issues

Target Audience

This course is geared to owners and operators of small drinking water systems under Ontario Regulation 319/08 with a single connection and no requirement for chlorine disinfection.

Course Trainer:

  Ralph Stanley

Ralph Stanley first graduated from Ryerson University in 1979 and is a certified Public Health Inspector. After 38 years he recently retired as Supervisor, Environmental Health with the Region of Peel.  Ralph has significant expertise in all public health areas and specifically aspects of drinking water and lead Peel’s safe water programs for many years.
Ralph currently does water policy for the Ontario Public Health Association Environmental Health Workgroup and previously lead the Association of Supervisors of Public Health Inspectors of Ontario Safe Water Sub-Committee.
Ralph currently serves as the Vice Chair with the Environmental Health Foundation of Canada (EHFC) and is an active member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors and the Association of Supervisors of Public Health Inspectors of Ontario. He has also published numerous public health technical articles and regularly peer reviews articles for the National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health.
Ralph considers his involvement in the Environmental Health profession along with teaching and education to be one of his most important passions in life. He looks forward to future opportunities to continue to support his profession in his retirement.
