The Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) is seeking a qualified professional to fill a one year maternity leave in the role of Scientist.

Salary Range: $70,561.14 - $89,558.81

Purpose of position
This position supports the Manager in the development and delivery of the Research Plan, as well as the operation, maintenance and upgrade of the laboratory and the Technology Demonstration Facility.
This position provides guidance to technicians, postsecondary co-op students, post-doctoral fellows and other assistants.
This position also supports the delivery of other initiatives such as technology demonstration and training. The position reports to the Manager, WCWC Research and Technology Institute.

Duties/responsibilities
In this role, the incumbent will complete the following tasks:

1. Support for the research program

  • >As part of a team, prepares, updates and delivers the Research Plan.
  • >Liaises with potential drinking water research stakeholders with approval of the Manager.
  • >Initiates and conducts pilot testing projects and the production of information documents, as part of a team, with approval of the    Manager
  • >Prepares proposals, reports and publications.
  • >Disseminates scientific and technical information through publications and presentations.
  • >As part of a team, reviews and updates Research Priorities to advise the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC).
2. Support for training
  • >Develops, reviews and delivers training courses, including hands-on and advanced courses with prior approval of the Manager.
3. Support for Technology Demonstration
  • >Works as a part of the team to identify improvements and upgrades necessary to the facility as hands-on training and pilot testing  platforms.
  • >Participates in the operation and development of the laboratory as a pilot testing and training platform.
4. Prepares and updates standard operating procedures, including safety procedures.
5. Participates in the procurement of technical equipment, supplies and services
6. May participates in WCWC committees, including the Research Advisory Committee.
7. Contributes in the development and regular update of the website content for research and technology demonstrations.
8. Responds to external queries.
9. Presents recommendations on proposed refinements to the Manager with sufficient details on benefits, costs, anticipated challenges/problems, stakeholders’ opinions, and so on, in order for the Manager to appreciate the benefits and risks involved in such potential changes.
Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the position Manager.

Knowledge Requirements:
The incumbent requires excellent knowledge of Ontario water research priorities with a focus on small water system challenges. As well, knowledge of the Centre’s research, training and support to innovation programs in order to research, develop, refine, and deliver hands-on training and technology demonstrations, and the related information materials.
The incumbent requires sufficient knowledge of the Centre’s research plan to contribute to its development, refinement, and delivery.
The incumbent requires a good understanding of the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 and its regulations, in order to ensure the consistency of demonstrations, training and research being developed.
The incumbent requires strong organizational, planning, research, and analytical skills to research and develop educational demonstrations. Good organizational skills are also required to develop efficient schedules for the research projects that will be in line with the Centre’s budgetary considerations.
The incumbent requires strong communications skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel is required.
The incumbent is expected to generate ideas and initiatives that result in new assignments.

The incumbent requires a minimum of a masters’ degree in science, applied sciences or engineering with a strong background in research, as well as proven knowledge of water quality, treatment, distribution, public health and the ability to prepare proposals and reports. A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.
