The Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) is seeking one (1) full time permanent and one (1) full time eight (8) month contract qualified professional in the following position:

Salary Range:  Band 6 $70,561.14 to $89,558.51



Purpose of position
This position supports the development and delivery of the Research Plan, the pilot testing program, the Helpline, the provision of scientific and technical information, and the   operation, maintenance and upgrade of the laboratory and the Technology Demonstration Facility. The position is responsible for the development and delivery of selected courses.

This position provides guidance to technicians and postsecondary co-op students within the project team structure.

The position reports to the Manager of the Research and Technology Institute (RTI).


Duties/responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities of this position include the following tasks.

1. Support for the Research Plan and the Pilot Testing Program
  • Prepares and delivers assigned components of the Research Plan.
  • Leads and executes pilot testing projects by liaising with the clients, preparing proposals, conducting experiments, developing reports and publishing results including technical papers and presenting at conferences.
  • As part of a team, reviews and updates Research Priorities to advise the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC).
2. Provision of scientific and technical information
  • Develops information documents such as literature reviews and Fact Sheets. 
  • Vets documents and third parties website content for inclusion and link from the Centre Website.
  • Provides and vet content of the Drinking Water Resource Library.
  • Contributes in the development and regular update of the website content.
3. Helpline
  • Responds to helpline inquiries. 
4. Support for the Technology Demonstration Facility and Laboratory
  • Works as a part of the team to identify improvements and upgrades necessary to the facility. 
  • Participates in the operation and development of the laboratory. 
  • Prepares and updates standard operating procedures, including safety procedures.
  • Participates in the procurement of technical equipment, supplies and services
5. Support for training
  • Develops reviews and delivers selected training courses as directed by the Manager
Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Manager.


Knowledge Requirements:
The incumbent requires excellent knowledge of Ontario water research priorities with a focus on small water system challenges. As well, knowledge of the Centre’s pilot testing, helpline, and training programs in order to research, develop, refine, and deliver hands-on training and technology demonstrations, is necessary.

The incumbent requires sufficient knowledge of the Centre’s research plan to contribute to its development, refinement, and delivery. The incumbent requires a good understanding of the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 and its regulations, in order to ensure the consistency of demonstrations, training and pilot testing being developed.

The incumbent requires strong organizational, planning, research, and analytical skills to research and develop educational demonstrations. Good organizational and financial skills are also required to develop efficient schedules for the pilot testing projects while keeping in mind budgetary considerations. 

The incumbent requires strong communications skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel is required. They are also expected to generate ideas and initiatives, in a team environment, that result in new assignments.


Job requirements
The incumbent requires a minimum of a masters’ degree in science, applied sciences or engineering with a strong background in research, as well as proven knowledge of water quality, treatment, distribution, public health and the ability to prepare proposals and reports. A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.
