The Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) is seeking one (1) full time qualified professional for the following role:

WCWC Research & Technology Institute 

Position:  Technician
Job Classification: Technician 4-5
Salary Range: Band 3 $52,912.55 - $74,121.86 

Purpose of position

This position supports the delivery of the programs of the WCWC Research & Technology Institute (RTI).   The position supports all stages of pilot testing, projects, including proposals, experiments, reports, publications and presentations of results. The position operates and maintains the equipment of the Technology Demonstration Facility/laboratory to ensure that they are functional for pilot testing, technology demonstration and hands-on training. The position supports the Helpline. The position assists in the delivery of hands-on training and may be involved in the development and delivery of selected other courses with prior written approval of the Manager.

The position reports to the Manager of WCWC Research and Technology Institute.


Duties/responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities of this position include the following tasks:

1. Support for Pilot Testing
  • Assists in the preparation of proposals, reports and publications by performing tasks such as proofreading, formatting, and organizing information using tables and graphs.
  • Conducts assigned bench and pilot scale testing experiments by setting up and operating the equipment, collecting data, sampling, analyzing samples and preparing results reports.
  • Procures supplies and outsourced sample analysis. 
2. Technology Demonstration
  • Ensures that the equipment, including the laboratory, is functional by performing regular maintenance, calibration, necessary troubleshooting and keeping up-to-date maintenance and calibration logs.
  • Procures, installs, maintains, operates and troubleshoots instrumentation and analyzers in the Technology Demonstration Facility and Laboratory.
  • Ensures consistency and the safe operation of equipment by developing and following standard operating procedures including safety related procedures.
  • Monitors outsourced maintenance contracts such as fume hood inspection. 
  • Procures reagents and other supplies.
  • Keeps up-to-date inventory of equipment (annually) supplies and chemicals (all times). 
  • Ensure that chemical wastes are collected, stored and disposed in compliance with applicable regulations and the requirements of the Hazardous Waste Information Network (HWIN). 
  • Ensures that safety data sheets (SDS) are available and up to date according to applicable regulations.
  • Conducts tours of the Technology Demonstration Facility.
3. Helpline
  • Responds to helpline inquiries to provide education and information.
4. Support for training
  • Assists in the preparation and delivery of hands-on training by ensuring that the supplies are available and the equipment is functional. These tasks include maintaining a schedule of courses that require equipment, equipment packing lists, packing and shipping equipment.
  • Supports the delivery of special training events (e.g. Maintenancefests, workshops) by preparing the hands-on equipment and ensuring it is functional including assembly, operation, disassembly and transportation/shipping. 
  • Sets up the pilot systems, the laboratory and distribution systems equipment for hands-on training. 
  • Procures equipment and supplies to support hands-on training. 
  • Ensures that the storage/garage facility located at 19 Ontario Road in Walkerton is kept in safe and orderly condition and promptly report any issue to the RTI Manager. 
  • Participates in the development and delivery of selected courses with the prior approval of RTI Manager, when deemed necessary for organizational requirements
Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the RTI Manager.

Knowledge Requirements:

The incumbent requires knowledge of the Centre’s pilot testing and training programs; drinking water treatment principles, methodologies, and practices sufficient to understand the various drinking water treatment and delivery processes, and the requirements of provincial drinking water legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines; the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 and its regulations; operating drinking water process units at full or pilot scale; drinking water sample collection and analysis.

The incumbent requires working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel. Good information researching, organizational and analytical skills are required. Good communications skills are also necessary.


Job requirements

The incumbent requires experience in operating drinking water process units at full or pilot scale and/or experience working in a drinking water laboratory. A college diploma or university degree specializing in water treatment is required.
A minimum of 2 years of related work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.
