The Centre is an operational service agency of the Government of Ontario established in October 2004 as part of the Province's response to the Walkerton Inquiry Report. The Centre provides scheduled public and on-site training for drinking water owners, operators, operating authorities and post secondary students across Ontario. The Centre's Technology Demonstration Facility, with its leading-edge drinking water technologies, is an effective platform for hands-on training and research.

The Walkerton Clean Water Centre (Centre) requires an experienced Human Resources Coordinator to join the management team. The Centre, with a staff of 25, requires a human resources generalist to manage all aspects of the Centre’s human resources function, undertake special projects and provide back-up to the Corporate Secretary role.

Join the Centre at an exciting time. The Board of Directors recently hired a new CEO. Part of the CEO’s mandate is to develop a modern and engaged workplace culture. The Human Resources Coordinator will be central to delivering on this mandate.


What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the CEO, the Human Resources Coordinator will:

  • Identify and address human resources matters
  • Manage and coordinate the development and maintenance of human resources policies, procedures, employee handbook, job descriptions, job classifications, salary ranges and pay equity plan; ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and maintaining similarity with Ontario Public Service human resources directives as per O. Reg. 304/04
  • Prepare the annual human resources plan with input from the management team
  • Act as direct contact with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Legal Services Branch in relation to all human resources related items
  • Manage short-term disability claims, recruitment, performance planning and review Act as the Centre’s Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Prevention policy Advisor
  • Mediate, conduct all internal investigations and manage external investigations
  • Provide independent leadership and project management of undertakings, often of a sensitive nature
  • Prepare reports for the CEO’s use
  • Assist the Board Chair/Vice Chair with human resources activities as requested
  • Prepare all human resources related correspondence and maintain files

How do I qualify?

The ideal candidate should have the following skills and attributes:

Education and experience

  • Extensive knowledge of human resources, mediation and engagement, normally gained through successful completion of a university degree, college diploma or professional training
  • Working knowledge of applicable employment legislation
  • Experience working in the Public Sector in a human resources capacity
  • Certified Human Resources Professional designation

Communication skills

  • Strong communications, consultation and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated tact and diplomacy

Other important skills

  • Ability to take charge of contentious issues
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and execute appropriate solutions
  • Operates with the highest ethical standards
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently using sound judgement when making sensitive decisions
